Up to eight migrants have died from hypothermia and others could be held in a “prison-like situation,” Spanish police and medical officials said on Saturday.
“There is a prison-like situation,” the Guardia Civil national police force said in a statement on Twitter, adding that they had rescued a number of migrants from rough seas on Friday morning near the north-east Canary Island of Tenerife.
Up to seven other migrants, some of whom appeared to have been in the water for days, were rescued in the same area, the statement said.
The Guinean and Malian migrants were in the water for three to four days, it said.
The Guardia Civil and the Spanish Red Cross rescue service said they were also concerned about a group of 20 people from Sudan, Nigeria and Mali who were in the water for four to five days.
“There is more concern about the people who remain in the sea and there is more concern about the possibility of hypothermia,” spokesman from the Spanish Red Cross said.
The migrants were picked up off the coast of Tenerife.
“Some of the people appear to be in a prison-like situation, and some of them seem to be in shock,” Spain’s public health system said in a Twitter post.
It said that 21 people rescued from the sea were being treated in hospital.
Four people, including two children, have died from hypothermia on their way to Spain.
“The ocean is a cruel master and we know that the temperature is dropping day after day,” said Miquel Gomez, from the rescue services, quoted by Diario de Canary.
“We are continuing with the rescue operations, and we are going to face the cold.”
Authorities warned that the coast could be covered by heavy waves until Sunday.
“The coast is not safe and it is at the highest risk. We are expecting waves and winds of up to one metre per second,” a source from the emergency services said.
